Project Overview

A Subscription Experience: Transforming Compliance into Opportunity

As the Allē for Business platform grew to serve thousands of users, we identified a critical gap: premium value-added features were offered for free, despite legal requirements mandating a paid subscription model. I was entrusted with designing a scalable subscription and membership experience to meet these legal obligations while creating a new revenue stream.

The Goal

Creating a Flexible Subscription System for Business Users

Our objective was twofold:

1. Launch a subscription model with Two pricing tiers to facilitate the adoption of new value-added features.
2. Provide users with robust subscription management tools, including options to downgrade or cancel plans, ensuring flexibility and transparency.

Collaborating closely with product and engineering teams, we aimed to deliver this experience within the second half of the year.

The Problem

Starting From Scratch: Building a Subscription Model From the Ground Up

The Allē platform did not have any existing subscription framework, meaning we had to design and develop the entire experience from the ground up. This required us to introduce Two pricing tiers and create features that allowed users to manage, upgrade, and downgrade their plans with ease.

By law, value-added features could only be offered to fewer than 1,000 users without a paid subscription model. Addressing this challenge was critical to unlocking our platform’s growth potential and ensuring compliance while enabling users to benefit from our newest features.

The Solution

A Scalable two-Tier Pricing Model for Business Users

We designed a Two-tier subscription system that enabled users to explore and adopt value-added features based on their needs. Key highlights included an intuitive grid-style interface showcasing the benefits of each plan and tools to easily manage, downgrade, or cancel subscriptions.

Research

Researching Best Practices in SaaS Subscriptions

To inform our design, I studied patterns from leading SaaS products, focusing on how they structured pricing tiers, displayed value-added features, and offered subscription management tools. This research shaped our approach to building a user-centric subscription experience.

Ideation

Designing, Iterate, and Validate

Based on product specifications and what I had discovered through other market examples I started to craft variations of patterns to present to stakeholders.

Conclusion

Selecting the best option

It was ultimately decided by stakeholders that we will have a grid like format to show all the value added benefits that would come with each tier.

The Impact

Ensuring Compliance While Building for Growth

The subscription model, launched in January 2023, allowed users to beta test our new features while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. This solution established a foundation for sustainable growth and unlocked a new revenue stream for the platform.

Following the launch, 100% of Allē for Business users were successfully transitioned to a free subscription tier. Additionally, 43% opted into a free trial of the Pro Plan, providing valuable feedback and accelerating adoption of our value-added features.

Lessons Learned: Growing Expertise in Scalable Subscription Design

This project deepened my understanding of designing subscription experiences at scale, particularly in creating intuitive systems for users to manage payments, memberships, and tiered plans. While my prior experience with subscription models gave me a solid foundation, tackling this initiative required navigating complexities like legal compliance and cross-functional alignment—skills I am excited to carry forward into future projects.
